Hoyt felt her take her hand away from his, but he didn't say anything in the crowd of people. He immediately felt bad for grabbing for it the way he had - he was still going through the motions he had been with Jessica. He didn't want Holly being attacked by the picketers and the reaction had been almost natural.
"I am really sorry for grabbing your hand back there. I am still going through the motions of being with Jessica and it was just instinct to do that so I could lead you through the crowd without them turning on you"
It was twice that Hoyt had apologized for touching Holly, and he wondered where his own head was at. He just hoped she didn't hate him forever and that he didn't completely screw up any possible friendship with her. Another part of him wondered if the reason why she was so jumpy was because something bad had happened to her in her past. That would of been terrible.
"And I know the excuses aren't helping either because I've already done it twice. From this moment on I promise, no more touching. Scout's honor"
When she commented about blaming the people and not the faith, it had been the first time Hoyt had heard that from anyone. He was in the front seat now, getting ready to put the keys in the ignition. "You know, I have never thought about it that way before. That was a great way to put it Holly."
“Hate has a funny way of leeching into everything, regardless of what god one believes in.”
The truck roared to life when he turned it on and popped it into gear, looking over his shoulder toward her.
"So, which way am I heading?"

"I am really sorry for grabbing your hand back there. I am still going through the motions of being with Jessica and it was just instinct to do that so I could lead you through the crowd without them turning on you"
Holly shook her head, running her fingers through her dark hair. “No, it’s not… it’s not that.” She didn’t care to elaborate on exactly what it was that bothered her, but she didn’t want him blaming himself either. Hoyt was a genuinely good guy- the last of an endangered breed- and she knew that he had taken it personally, as if he had caused some grave offense. Which was only sort of true, and absolutely not his fault. “Really, it’s okay. I’m sorry I overreacted.” Sorry though she might be, she couldn’t change it. If he went to touch her now she’d still pull away.
"And I know the excuses aren't helping either because I've already done it twice. From this moment on I promise, no more touching. Scout's honor"
“Hoyt, really, it’s fine.” She met his gaze, giving the smallest of nods. She knew his intentions were nothing less than honorable- that was just the kind of guy he was. “I promise you, the issues are all mine.” It was a weak attempt at a joke, and she looked away, crossing her ankles anxiously. The conversation was too close to another place, a bad place, for her comfort.
"You know, I have never thought about it that way before. That was a great way to put it Holly."
She shrugged. “I sort of speak from experience. I get a lot of, ah, flak for what I am. Especially now that vampires are out, people sort of see it as an excuse to let their imaginations run wild.”
"So, which way am I heading?"
“Back towards the center of town. I’m staying with friends.” Well, she supposed that was one way of describing Hallow. Holly owed a lot of her current existence to the woman. “I don’t suppose you know where the Moon Goddess Emporium is?” He didn’t look like the type that would wander into Hallow’s shop, even if he was a bit more open minded than she had originally give him credit for. “I live on the second floor. I help run the shop during the day.”

“No, it’s not… it’s not that.”
Hoyt couldn't hide that he was a bit relived. he had been really worried that he overstepped his boundaries too far for the second time that night. Usually he didn't give his gestures a second thought, if he remembered right he had coaxed Sookie a couple times with a pat on the back or by grazing by her when he opened the door for her. It had seemed presumably innocent on his part so he hadn't really given it much thought.
“Really, it’s okay. I’m sorry I overreacted.” He simply shook his head. "You don't have to be the one apologizing Holly, I should know better"
When she tried to reassure him that it was fine he nodded, though he still was trying really really hard to discipline himself so it didn't happen again. “I promise you, the issues are all mine.” He glanced at her as the words left her lips and shook his head. "That is a terrible shame Holly, I'm sorry for whatever happened in your past."
Again he was agreeing with her when it came to her opinion on people vs vampires. When she asked if he knew where the Moon Goddess Emporium was he had to shake his head. It was in Shreveport, he assumed, because he never saw that store in Bon Temps and he had lived there all his life.
"What is that, like a charm store?"

"You don't have to be the one apologizing Holly, I should know better"
Holly frowned at him, shaking her head again. “You shouldn’t have to be apologizing for who you are, Hoyt. I… I admire who you are, really. I’m just not… not capable of any of that.” She closed her eyes, sighing. That wasn’t what she had wanted to say at all. “I can just tell from our, what, one hour acquaintance that you care about people. You’re not reaching out to them to be sleazy, or cop a feel, or anything like that, but because you care, and you want to show it. That’s rare.” She looked away, out of the window. Holly wished she could be anything like that, but she always looked at people with suspicion. Even with Hallow’s coaching, Holly couldn’t help but think the worst of everyone she came into contact with.
"That is a terrible shame Holly, I'm sorry for whatever happened in your past."
She looked back at him, taking a moment to find her voice. “Don’t apologize to me for something you didn’t do.” How ironic was it that this sweet boy, this sweet boy who would never be capable of doing what David had, was the one to apologize to her when David had never said anything other that “you deserved it”? Her eyes stung at the thought, and she rubbed them, forcing her mind elsewhere.
"What is that, like a charm store?"
Surprised, Holly laughed. “Something like that.” She agreed, though she had a feeling they weren’t discussing the same sort of charms. “It’s a bit of an eclectic place, of a sort. Hallow opened it a month or so ago.” And had been more than willing to take in a witch that was down on her luck to help her run it. “You should stop by sometime when we’re actually opened. Hallow makes awesome tea.” All right, that was lame, but Holly couldn’t force herself to say “you should stop by because I really like you, and want to get to know you better.” She couldn’t very well invite him to circle- he wasn’t a witch at all, and she had a feeling he’d balk if she suggested it.

“You shouldn’t have to be apologizing for who you are, Hoyt. I… I admire who you are, really. I’m just not… not capable of any of that.” Hoyt nodded, he had understood what she was saying. He knew that everyone was different, and he certainly wasn't a biggot like his mother was.
“I can just tell from our, what, one hour acquaintance that you care about people. You’re not reaching out to them to be sleazy, or cop a feel, or anything like that, but because you care, and you want to show it. That’s rare.” Another thing that Holly was right about, he did want to show it. It was like with Summer, even though she wasn't his type she had managed to push herself onto him and he had been too polite to say to her that she had made him miserable. It was hard for him to flat out tell her because he cared about hurting her feelings. It was in that moment Hoyt thanked god that Holly was nothing like Summer, he really didn't want another Summer in his life.
“Don’t apologize to me for something you didn’t do.”
Easier said that done, Hoyt had been apologizing a lot that night. When the conversation changed to the store Hoyt was relieved. He had no idea who this Hallow was that she had mentioned but if Holly was friends with her than Hoyt was sure she couldn't of been all that bad. “You should stop by sometime when we’re actually opened. Hallow makes awesome tea.”
"I think I will, I have tomorrow off so I don't mind swinging by. What time do you guys open?"
The streets of Shreveport were still busy at this time of night and as they entered the downtown core Hoyt was careful to also pay attention to what was going on around him. The last hour had been pleasant for him, and he really had enjoyed his short time with Holly so in his mind there was no reason to not come and visit her again.

"I think I will, I have tomorrow off so I don't mind swinging by. What time do you guys open?"
Tomorrow was Sunday, which in the witch world had absolutely no religious stigma and was just like any other day. It wasn’t like the churchgoers were going to drop in- at least, not if they knew what Moon Goddess Emporium was, anyway- so they stayed open normal hours. “Ten. I’ll be around earlier than that.” She doubted Hallow would tell her she couldn’t let him in, if he came before they opened. Hallow rarely got pushy about anything- but when she did want something, Holly was always very quick to agree with her. She had this… aura about her that said she was in charge, all of the time.
As they got closer to her current abode, Holly watched the shoppers milling about. There were a lot of couples out tonight, she noted. She wasn’t exactly sure how that made her feel. She wasn’t likely to ever be a part of one of those again. She didn’t know if that made her relieved or a bit sad.
When she could finally see the Emporium in the distance, Holly turned to look at him, offering him a small, almost shy smile. “Thank you for the ride.” She didn’t even seem to notice the woman that was standing outside the store, watching them intently, as if she had known they were coming. Holly was only really aware of Hoyt.
